Internet and Online Safety

The internet can be a very wonderful place, just as the real world that it is connected to. However, not everywhere and everyone is safe. It is important to know how to use it and stay safe. Having good relationships and making time to talk together is always a really good place to start.

Ambitious about Autism and The NSPCC have created these activities to help you talk about online safety at home.

The parent controls for computers, tablets and phones are really useful. You will need to make sure that your devices are set up correctly and have the parental controls switched on.  They let you set screen time, set age related content, block and permit sites, control online spending and manage application installations. Here are some helpful guides:

Microsoft Windows 10 and Xbox 1 – parental controls and settings

Android (Google) Devices – parental controls and settings

Apple (iPhones etc) Devices – parental controls and settings

We have also found the Parent Safe website helpful

Youtube has a “kids app” which some families might find helpful:

Here are some other sites that we have found useful:

  • Childnet STAR Films – 4 short animations that help children understand staying safe online.
  • Know IT All – lots of useful advice for keeping yourselves and your children safe on the Internet
  • Think U Know – containing internet safety advice for those aged from 5 to 16, along with parents and teachers, this site is produced by CEOP (the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre).

Please get in touch with us if you need more help with keeping children safe online. We occassionally run workshops for parents.
